Communications and Events Internships at the Institute of Making

Volunteers with visors.

The Institute of Making Interns are an important part of our membership community, and assist our team with different areas of work across the organisation.

About our internships

The Institute of Making runs a paid internship programme for UCL students and staff. These roles have a fixed 12-month term, starting in April 2025 and finishing in April of the following year.

Besides providing a casual job which will be flexible and understanding about your other responsibilities at UCL, being an intern at the Institute of Making offers the opportunity to learn a range of new skills.

This year, we have two types of internship available; a communications internship and an events internship. Although you’ll be assigned to one type of internship, you may on occasion work collaboratively with both teams. There are separate job descriptions for each type of internship, but just one application portal - if you like the sound of both internships, please choose the 'Either / don't mind' option under 'Which Intern position are you applying for'. Note: you will only be offered one internship.

All interns need to work at least two to three shifts per month, as well as working the Festival of Stuff (likely the 21st June 2025). Interns also need to attend two mandatory paid training days.

The role of an intern

We rely on all of our interns to:

- To uphold the Institute of Making ethos
- To be kind and helpful
- To contribute to a safe and inclusive work environment

Interns will be trained in specific areas of work.

As a communication intern, you will be involved with all areas of our communications - from photography to proofreading, writing, social media and community building. You'll learn basic communications management skills, and get to exercise your creative flair and love of making and materials with our audience in mind.

As an events intern, you will help to deliver our large-scale public events once or twice a year, assist makers at workshops and masterclasses and help to deliver our Lunchtime Looks. You'll learn basic events management skills, and explore your passion for making and materials from an events focused lens.
