The Institute of Making Stratford opens this October!

If you’re an Institute of Making member, you’ll be able to access our brand-new, bespoke workshop this October. We’ll be running orientation sessions to show you the space, after which your card will work on our Stratford door.

First things first: what actually *is* the Institute of Making Stratford?

A palace of process, built to house even more materials and making facilities, the Institute of Making Stratford offers a multitude of new, creative opportunities!

At the heart of the Stratford site are our open-plan multi-materials spaces: the Studio and the General Workshop. Plotted around these are a number of specialist rooms, including the Materials Library Room, Ceramics Room, Metal Room, CNC Room, Digital Suite and Experimental Kitchen.

And what can I do at Institute of Making Stratford this term?

Drop-in workshop access

From October onwards, members can drop in to use the General Workshop, Ceramics Room and Digital Suite (Lasercutting Room and 3D Printing & Electronics Room). Members will also be able to visit our Papermaker-in-Residence in the Studio. As our team expands and further facilities are installed, other rooms will open throughout the year.

Note on opening hours!
Before any drop-in visit, make sure to check our opening times. Unlike our Bloomsbury space, different rooms and facilities in our Stratford space will be open on different days.

Bookable activities

Keep a lookout for bookable activities at Stratford. A number of exciting masterclasses are in the pipeline, and our Papermaker-in-Residence is offering bookable consultations.

Count me in! How do I get access to the Institute of Making Stratford?

To get drop-in access to the Institute of Making Stratford, you just need to attend a Stratford Orientation. After completing this 30-minute session, we will enable your UCL ID card, granting you access during our opening hours.

Looking to book events like making masterclasses or our Papermaking Consultations? These do not require a Stratford Orientation. Simply book on, show up and enjoy!

What about our beloved Bloomsbury space?

The Institute of Making Bloomsbury is going nowhere (and re-opens for drop-in access in October). The Bloomsbury workshop and Materials Library will continue as usual, and we will run events there too, but we hope that you will also join us in our brand-new East London space.
