Designer James Shaw joins the Institute of Making to reconsider a ubiquitous material in our everyday lives; HDPE plastic. As part of this explorative session about the nature, processing and usage of plastics, James will use the Institute’s wondrous Materials Library and its collection of plastics samples to open up a conversation about our relationship to the made world. Participants will observe and then work with the unique HDPE waste pellet extruder gun built by James, and will leave the workshop with an HDPE object of their own design.
James Shaw is a designer and a maker exploring the material landscape in a hands on way. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Art's Design Products programme and now runs a studio in London working on projects that interrogate the material, systemic and formal approaches to the creation of objects. Frequently his work considers the resources around us challenging the notion of ‘waste’ to create new beautiful materials.
This workshop is part of the Festival of Stuff.
