Festival of Stuff: Morning - Fermentation Masterclass (Online)

Festival of Stuff Public Events

*** Ticket bookings go live on Wednesday 18th May at 7pm. Due to the popularity of the workshops we can only allow two Festival of Stuff workshop bookings per person across the week. ***

How do you create colourful ferments in your kitchen using plant material and microbes readily available? Join us for this online masterclass with fermentation educator Jelena Belgrave, and explore the world of wild and cultured microbes to create an explosion of colour in your kitchen. Together we will make a wild soda starter and prepare a vibrant concoction for lacto-fermentation. You can ask questions as we go along and if we don’t manage to answer all of them, we will use our demo session in the afternoon to do so.

To take part in the session you will need:

-       A tray or bowl, some glass jars with lids, and a chopping board
-       A permanent marker
-       A laptop or phone to join the online workshop video call with.
-       Ingredients (a week before the workshop Jelena will email round a list of ingredients that you need to collect)

No experience or skill necessary, all welcome!

Fermentation expert and potter Jelena started to investigate her food identity in London’s diverse cultural environment after a career with BBC News. Through her fermentation practice, Jelena explores her Balkan heritage and delves into macrobiotic training, extracting and sharing fermentation practices from around the world. She runs fermentation workshops for kids and adults at a greenhouses charity in South East London and provides teaching and consultation for both individuals and food businesses through tailored private workshops. Her young family has become accustomed to having Research & Development jars all around the house, although they wish she would contain them in one place.

This workshop is part of the Festival of Stuff.
