Festival of Stuff: Morning Session - Felt Making Masterclass

Festival of Stuff

Felt is one of the oldest fabrics in the world, formed by the natural phenomenon of animal fibres matting together in the presence of moisture and movement. The simplicity of its construction implies that it was probably discovered by accident in many different ways.

In this masterclass, lead by master felt maker Heather Belcher, you will prepare and blend coloured wool fibres to make a small piece of felt cloth.  You will also learn how to make a solid felt ball.

Felt is a versatile medium with widespread uses, including underlay for carpets, piano hammers, rugs, hats, tents, parts for cushioning machinery, and in ancient China it was used for making protective shields for warriors. Hollow, vessel-like objects such as garments can be formed with no stitching; the traditional coats and cloaks from Central Asia were made from felt.

This masterclass is not suitble for under 16's, people between the ages of 16-18 must be accompanied by an adult.
