Festival of Stuff: Saturday Extravaganza

Festival of Stuff Public Events

Location: Institute of Making, Malet Place, UCL, London, WC1E 7JE. Map.

Join London’s most creative lab for an extravaganza of materials and making! The Festival of Stuff finale is back and bursting with delectable making madness as we once again fill the street outside the Institute of Making with demonstrations and making stations.

Learn the art of stuffing vegan sausages, and make mirror from glass! Visit our free event for a whole host of hands-on activities exploring soil, sand, glass, carbon sequestering, and more.

Glass is under the spotlight at this year’s extravaganza, with an array of making activities dedicated to this wondrous material. Melt sand in microwave kilns, cut and solder tiles, analyse archaeological shards with a mass spectrometer, and process red-hot liquid glass at a spectacular mobile furnace run by glass artist Matt Durran.

Marvel at the Materials Library and tickle the tastebuds with sugar working experts from the world-famous culinary school, Le Cordon Bleu. On an earthy note, we will take a closer look at how the world of compost intersects with making, with expert compost ‘gurus’ on hand and a ‘compost pet’ making activity.

Explore the strange beast that is the Institute of Making shop (cash only). All this and much more will be at our Saturday Extravaganza for exploring, creating and turning all on its head.

The Institute of Making is an interdisciplinary research organisation, with a Materials Library and a multi-material workshop. Our aim is to provide all those interested in the made world with a creative home in which to contemplate all aspects of materials and their relationship to making.

Institute of Making events are free and open to all.

Drop in on Saturday 17th from 1pm, gates close at 5pm.
