Festival of Stuff: Session Three - Blacksmithing Masterclass

Festival of Stuff

Blacksmithing experts Richard Pace and Terry McNulty from Artisan Ironwork will be setting up their mobile forge here at the Institue of Making. Blacksmithing is known as the "King of Trades", as all other trades came to the blacksmith for tools and equipment, whereas smiths were self-sufficient. Using a fire in a forge or hearth that is fuelled by coke, metal is heated up to a working temperture of around 1000 degrees C. The red hot metal is then shaped using using hammers, anvils and other tools into practical but artistic items. The modern blacksmith still retains the skills of their illustrious predecessors, but has had to adapt to modern society to keep their trade alive. Come and learn about what contemporary blacksmiths do; play with fire, hit things with hammers, and fettle some metal!
