Maker in Residence - Mandy Brannan
Join this event
This autumn, we welcome Mandy Brannan – a London-based book artist and papermaker - to our Stratford space.
Mandy will be in residence at the Institute of Making Stratford for six weeks, to share her vast, remarkable knowledge of paper fibers and experiment with new, large-scale artworks.
Since the 90’s, Mandy has developed her experimental papermaking practice by combining both Japanese and Western papermaking methods. Through combining traditional bast fibers (gampi and kozo ) with leaf fibers (abaca and sisal), Mandy creates complex patterns and layers influenced by her cultural research.
Institute of Making members can drop into our Stratford workshop on Tuesdays to see Mandy’s work, ask questions about her practice and even join in with some on-the-spot making.
Mandy’s materials-led approach includes gathering and processing found (or specially grown) plant materials, gathered from locations close to her home and studio. From these, she has also created a series of ‘Plant Manuals’, containing plant paper samples, papermaking recipes and plant-based anecdotes for others to learn from.
