Member Masterclass: Altering Denim

Member Events

This masterclass takes on a ubiquitous fabric: denim. Jeans are popular and widely-worn garments known for style, function and durability, but the thickness of the fabric that makes it such a great trouser material also can also make these garments tricky to adapt and repurpose. Together with expert seamstress Ayat Salimane, participants will learn how to adjust jeans and other denim items by adding in darts. The session will also go over how to sew flat seams - the sturdiest seam for heavy fabrics like denim. Finally, we will look at techniques that can help us repurpose and upcycle our denim pieces and breathe new life into them.

Ayat Salimane is a self-taught seamstress. A graduate of law, she taught herself to sew out of university to quench her creativity and has been making bespoke occasion dresses under her brand Salimane Couture since. She enjoys trialing new techniques and experimenting with new fabrics.
