Member Masterclass: Experimental Indigo Dyeing

Member Events

This experimental dyeing masterclass will start by teaching participants how to dip fabric into an indigo dye vat without aerating it. Once everyone has mastered the art of the dip, the group will try out dipping different materials and objects into the vat: textiles, wood, SLS 3D prints, and more are encouraged. While making, Sam will tell the group about her research into cultural history of materials and making and outline a brief history of natural indigo and its presence in the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. As the dye vat will remain in the Institute of Making for members to use in the weeks after the masterclass, Sam will also teach participants and staff a bit of dye bath upkeep and maintenance.

Samantha Russell of Tens Studio is an artist and natural dyer currently studying a masters in Global Black Studies, Decolonisation and Social Justice. As part of her creative practice she explores black history through hand crafts and natural dyeing and enjoys passing on this knowledge to others.
