Member Masterclass: Stool in a day

Member Events

In this masterclass, led by furniture maker Emma Leslie, participants will make a stool in a day. The day-long masterclass will give you a basic understanding of furniture construction using hand tools. The class combines hand and power tools, and you will learn techniques such as planing, sawing, routing, drilling, sanding and shaping. The tenon joints that hold the stool together will be cut and shaped by hand and then fitted using a traditional wedging technique. During the making we'll discuss timber properties and the function of the tools commonly used in furniture making. This masterclass is designed for complete beginners to intermediate makers.

Emma Leslie is a furniture maker and designer based in London. One half of furniture making duo Studio LW, she trained in cabinet making and her practice combines traditional skills with contemporary design.

Studio LW's varied practice includes a design collection as well as bespoke commissions and artist collaborations. Everything is designed and produced in their workshop in South East London. The two also set up the East London School of Furniture Making in early 2016, with a view to sharing their skills, encouraging a community of makers interested in discovering wood as a sustainable material, and learning how to make things by hand. The school hopes to stimulate a resurgence of making versus consuming, and an understanding of responsible sustainable design.
