Public Online Masterclass: Pattern Cutting with Ayat Salimane
Public EventsIn this masterclass, participants will join fashion designer Ayat and UCL student Fareeha to explore how to transfer a favourite t-shirt or long-sleeved top into a sewing pattern, in order to recreate their beloved garment in a new fabric. Ayat will teach us how to draw the pattern, cut it out into usable sections, and transfer it to a new fabric, while also talking through alterations that can be made to the pattern and how to factor in considerations for different kinds of fabrics. Fareeha will open up a conversation with Ayat and rest of the group to explore different types of pattern cutting, including how pattern-cutting differs from one culture to another, and the rise of 'zero-waste' pattern cutting.
To take part in these sessions you will need:
- A computer or tablet with a working camera and mic.
- T-shirt or long-sleeved top (not a button-up, just a simple basic one!)
- Two marker pens in different colours
- Ruler (ideally 1m, otherwise 30cm)
- Sewing pins
- Scissors
- You will also need to email your postal address to events@instituteofmaking.org.uk as we will post you a few specialist materials.
Ayat Salimane is a British-Moroccan designer and seamstress who brings together traditional Moroccan designs and British styles. She takes pleasure in experimenting with new techniques, fabrics, and designs, to exercise her creativity and imagination. Hand-crafting each gown from sketch to finish herself, Ayat is well trained in the intricacies of made-to-measure pattern cutting and garment making.
Fareeha is a Laidlaw Scholar and History student at University College London, and has co-programmed this event with the Institute of Making team. Fareeha finds style inspiration in museums and magazines, but also in everyday people walking the streets and catching the tube. She’s eager to see a world where everyone has the means to express their individual style, and so is conducting research into diversity and innovation in clothing design.
