Member Workshop: Using Ceramic Underglazes

Member Events

In this fun and creative workshop, events manager and ceramicist Sara Brouwer will get you to playfully explore the Institute of Making’s new ceramic underglazes, and in the process explain several ways of applying these to clay. Sara will start by demonstrating five different underglaze techniques: Mishima, sgraffito, transfers, stencils and painting, which you will try out through rapid-fire exercises. In the second half of the workshop, you will apply the techniques you like best on either a leather-hard piece of your own, or a ready-made bowl.

If you would like to decorate your own pieces, please make these before the day of the workshop and, if possible, wrap them in plastic to leave them slightly damp.

In her ceramics, Sara likes to experiment with asymmetrical thrown pieces and home-made glaze recipes to produce fluid shapes, dreamy colours and strange textures. The resulting forms are delicate and magical, each revealing their own secrets.
