Members Masterclass: Furnace Making for the Luted Crucible Bronze Casting

Member Events

Luted or sealed crucible casting is low a cost, and low-tech method of casting, relatively unknown outside India and west Africa. Artist Piers Watson has been exploring this type of casting and has been teaching it all over the world. He has come to the Institute of Making to lead us in a week-long exploration of how bronze making was done since the early days of its history.

During the week, we will explore how to make a portable propane fired furnace. Participants will be involved in every step of the process and will need to attend the full course. You are encouraged to apply for the Bronze casting as well as the furnace making.

  • Preparing the barrel.
  • Mixing the rice husk and clay mixture for the inside of the barrel.
  • Packing the individual sections of the barrel with the refractory layers.
  • Fabricate a set of tongs, which will enable you to get the luted crucible out of the furnace.
  • On the final day you will get the opportunity to use your kiln to cast a luted crucible.

See our blog post from last years bronze casting, however the furnace is slightly different design this year: click here

The plan for the week:
Monday 2pm – 5pm: Prepare materials and cut barrels
Tuesday 2pm – 5pm: Pack sections with refractory materials and leave to dry.
Wednesday 10am – 12pm: Talk about Bastar Metal Casters
Thursday 2pm – 5pm: Finish furnaces and fabricate tongs.
Friday 9am – 6pm: All day casting.

This workshop is free, and all materials will be provided. However, if you are risk assessed and signed off to be able to take your kiln home there may be a small cost involved with purchasing of the hose, regulator and burner (note we will not supply the propane gas bottles for you to take home).

Applicants need to be inducted members of the Institute of Making.
