Public Masterclass - Enamelling (Session 4)

Public Events

Please note: As we are testing a few different booking systems this month, please read the below booking information carefully before you proceed. Due to the popularity of the masterclasses, we can only allow one masterclass booking per person across the whole programme.

About this masterclass:

Explore the process of enamelling and its historical context with artist and metal worker, Helen Carnac. Helen will give a series of short demonstrations of the basic principles and methods of fusing vitreous enamel, also known as porcelain enamel, to metal. After this, participants will try the techniques themselves and create a small panel in the process, which will be fired on the spot to about 800 °C to produce a smooth, durable enamel coating. The word 'enamel' comes from the Latin vitreum, meaning "glassy".'

Helen Carnac is an artist, maker and curator who lives and works in Somerset. Setting up her studio in the early 1990‘s, Helen develops projects using design methodologies that are rooted in an acute awareness of physical location, place and working practices.

This masterclass is suitable for ages 18+, aside from that, no experience or skill necessary, all welcome!

Important information about our staggered ticket release for this event:

  • We are trialling a staggered release for tickets to our enamelling classes, in case it proves to be an easier method for our audiences to obtain tickets to our public events.
  • On Thursday 22nd September, half of the available tickets will go live to book at 7am. The remaining tickets will go live for booking at 7pm.
  • Unfortunately, the tickets may be oversubscribed, so the staggered release doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get a ticket.
  • If the event is fully booked you can join the waiting list, or join the ballot for blacksmithing masterclasses which opens on Friday 23rd September.
