Starter Session: Made-to-Measure Hammer (Thursday)

Member Events

Join Linda Brothwell, our Maker in Residence for a Made-to-Measure Hammer session.

Using one of the many pre-loved hammers in the workshop of Institute of Making, you will adapt the handle to make it fit you and your proposed use. As handles are made to a ‘standard’ size which often doesn’t suit the use, adapting the hammer could take the form of shortening the handle using woodworking tools like saws, rasps and files. You will also be adapting the grip to marry up with your intended function; learning about twine whipping techniques, brightly coloured texture dipping, as well as scribed markings. For fun and function, there will be many materials and making methods for you to play and experiment with, with Linda on hand to guide and encourage you.

Note: if you cannot attend a starter session, you can drop in throughout the week to see how Linda is getting on as our Maker in Residence.

Important information about our ticket ballot for this event:

  • We are trialling a ballot system for ticket booking for these Starter Sessions, in case it proves to be a fair and easy method for people to obtain tickets to our public events in the future.
  • Entering the ballot means that you've entered into a draw for the opportunity to book a ticket to a Starter Session. From Tuesday 15th November 2022 onwards, successful entrants will be sent a booking link, which must be completed within 24 hours to secure a ticket.
  • Unfortunately, the ballot may be oversubscribed, so entering it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be offered tickets.
  • The ballot is open for a limited time: from 5am on Friday 11th November 2022 until 23:59pm on Monday 14th November 2022.
  • Once tickets are fully booked, we will notify everyone and offer you the opportunity to join the waiting list.
