Lacerated Cardboard

Material ID: 81

Description

This sheet of shredded cardboard was found in a package where it was being used as protective cushioning for the object inside. The manufacturers of cardboard-shredding machines see their technology primarily in terms of the economic and environmental benefits of extending the life of old packaging by using it to insulate and reinforce new packaging. Unintentionally, these machines also create a material with an attractive geometry, texture and springiness not unlike a textile woven from natural fibres, bringing to mind traditional wickerwork or Samoan pandanus weaving.
