Spray-On Felt

Material ID: 32

Description

This fibrous turquoise sheet is a fabric that can be sprayed directly from an aerosol can or spray gun directly onto the skin. In the late 1990s, inspired by a can of silly string, designer Dr Manel Torres and chemical engineer Prof Paul Luckman began developing ways to bond and liquefy fibres so that they could be sprayed in liquid form. Once they are out of the can, the solvent evaporates and the fibres bond, forming a snug-fitting garment. The fabric is sterile so can reportedly be used as a bandage, and because it can be tuned to produce both hard and soft fabrics, the manufacturer claims it could also be used to spray on casts for broken bones.
