Drop-in use
Drop into the workshop during our opening hours to use this tool, but ask a technician if you need any training first.
Key information
Yellow tools require further training. Training will be available either in the form of a bookable tool training session, or by dropping into the space and making an arrangement with a technician.
A lathe is designed for precisely machining metals such as brass, copper, steel, aluminium and plastics such as nylon and acetal.
Lathes work by holding a work piece horizontally and rotating it while a fixed cutting tool is moved along the work to remove excess material. Because of its rotation around the z-axis, parts are machined as cylinders and cuts are symmetrical about the axis.
Different tools can also be attached to its carriage to perform different actions, like knurling, parting and facing.

No wood can be used on this machine.
What can I use this tool for?
The lathe can be used for any precise machining of many types of metal and plastics, such as turning tapers, boring, drilling, reaming, knurling, and tapping.

What training do I need to use this tool?
To use a lathe you will need to book and attend the Lathe Tool Training session.
When you have completed the tool training session you will be able to book a lathe during workshop opening hours.
